Friday Fictioneers is hosted by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields who provides us with a photo prompt. Each week’s challenge is to write a 100-word story inspired by the photo. Click here to play along or just read more stories.
Persistent Patience
I carried the fantasy for years, never thinking it would be a reality. First, she had a boyfriend. Then, she wasn’t ready to date anyone. When she acquiesced, I reserved an outdoor table with a white rose at Luigi’s for Friday evening as the sun would be setting over the lake.
My heart shuddered as I read the sign, “Closed due to flooding.”
Before I could stutter an apology, she cleared the seaweed off a bench and wiped her hands on my shirt.
“It’s gonna be a beautiful sunset.”
I smiled and made a mental note to keep wipes handy.

Loved reading this. Great characterisation in that last line. 🙂

She’s definitely a keeper, I hope he doesn’t make a mess of it!

If he does, maybe he can just wipe it on her shirt.

Heh. Now that was totally unexpected, and very sweet 🙂

Yeah, I have a sweet side. Now, that you know that, you may have to be “silenced.” Thank you.

That’s not what I would have guessed he was thinking at the end. You gave it a much more noble ending. Good story.

Uh-oh! What was he supposed to be thinking? That’s what I would be thinking, along with “Please don’t say anything dumb. Please don’t say anything dumb. Well, that was dumb. Please just let that slide.” Thank you.

So sweet that you are shy and awkward around women. Probably not for you. Consider it slid.

I don’t know how sweet it is, but it’s definitely awkward.

White shirt too, I bet. Is he worried about germs by any chance? 😀

These days, everybody better be worried about germs. 🤧

Well, she’s certainly sending out mixed messages there. I think maybe overlook the dirty shirt and concentrate on the other side of her.

After all the time he’s wanted this night, he will definitely overlook the dirty shirt.

Dear Nobbin,
I hope she’s worth waiting for. Wiping her hands on his shirt seems a bit rude. 😉 Sweet story.

That night alone probably made it worth the wait. I think she thought of wiping her hands on his shirt as playful or a familiarity that extends beyond the standard first date. Thank you.

I think my roommate just got up, and Bat was trying to entice her to go back to bed.

She sounds like a keeper 🙂

Yep, as long as one has a consistent supply of hand wipes.

The date wasn’t a total disaster. Nice story.

Nope, disaster averted. I don’t know about that shirt, though. Thank you.

This is too sweet… maybe if she’d wiped her hands on her own clothes… but still…

I know. I hate that kind of shit. I don’t know how this came out of my brain. I guess I was feeling optimistic on Wednesday. I think he’ll forgive the shirt thing but always have a wipe ready.

He is being very generous. Probably is taking it as a sign that she isn’t too fussy…

Given the time it took to get this date, he’s going to put up with a lot before giving up if he ever does.

Finally, the timing is right! Can’t let a little (or lots) of seaweed get in the way. What a romantic story. 🙂

If love can’t make it past the seaweed stage, it’s doomed from the start. Thank you.
