Friday Fictioneers is hosted by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields who provides us with a photo prompt. Each week’s challenge is to write a 100-word story inspired by the photo. Click here to play along or just read more stories.
A Crack In The Darkness
Thunder rumbled. Lights flickered. Lightning cracked the darkness. Wind and dogs howled. Windows rattled. Rain crashed into the building.
Anabel and I got out her vast candle collection in preparation for the inevitable power outage. I thought we could turn it into a romantic evening. Anabel jumped and screamed every time the building shook. It wasn’t the type of screaming for which I was hoping. The 13th, I’m sorry, “14th” floor wasn’t the best place to feel secure during such a storm.
The storm wasn’t the scariest thing in the sky. The real terror lay behind the clouds.
What lies behind the clouds?

Dang it! I forgot that part.

ooooh! I wonder what that was, maybe the romantic night might be more of a terror fest…

There’s nothing more romantic than a terror fest.

The aliens are to blame!
Don’t waste the good candles. Great atmosphere.

Just like a human to blame the poor little aliens. Thanks, T.

That certainly was a cliff hanger.

I didn’t want to spoil the ending for anybody.

Well done. But it is still the 13th floor. 🙂

All right. His name is Alan. They met on the subway. He got up and gave her his seat. They have a French Bulldog named Buster. Thank you.

having candles ready suggests this is a regular occurrence. What is behind the clouds, ready to pounce?

The Jamaican army. They’re invading again.

Oooh, my mind’s eye sees a gigantic space shio, like in ‘independence day’… I laughed about the type of screams he wasn’t hoping for. And your gravatar: Puppies!

The threat a in the mind of the beholder. I would expect you to see a spaceship. I’m always happy to provide a laugh. Thanks.
As of 45 minutes ago, we’re down to two. It’s bittersweet.

I can easily believe that it’s hard to let go of these cute puppies. Will you keep one?

We will keep Zero. Someone asked my roommate, who is the breeder, how many she would keep from this litter. She said, “Zero.” I said, “Great! Which one’s named Zero.” It turned out to be the only girl, and she tweaked the spelling to Xero.

Pretending it’s not the 13th floor won’t help I fear! It’s coming to getcha’!

Is not the 13th floor by any other name a different floor?

I really felt the element of danger in this story, so I am leaving for warmer climates

Wise decision.

Scary. Looks like they’ll have to take a rain check on their romantic evening. Better save the candles too. I don’t think whatever it is that’s on its way is going to restore the power any day soon.

Literally a rain check. I don’t think they’re coming to fix the power. Thank you.

Dear Nobbin,
I admit I laughed at “wasn’t the type of screaming…” You took me from a normal electrical storm to something more ominous. Good job.

I have to start you laughing, then sneak up on with the chilling (sort of) ending. Thank you, Rochelle.

I always laugh when they skip the number 13 in the naming of floors. And, way to leave us hanging!

I can’t wrap my head around most superstitions. Thank you. That was my goal. I’m glad I could achieve it.

Does tomorrow morning lie beyond the clouds, with an “it’s not me, it’s you” moment? As if tonight isn’t bad enough already, with Anabel’s continuous jumping – and screaming for the wrong reason.

That is an interesting interpretation I had not considered. Everyone is free to fill in the blank for themselves. I like what you did there.
