Friday Fictioneers is hosted by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields who provides us with a photo prompt. Each week’s challenge is to write a 100-word story inspired by the photo. Click here to play along or just read more stories.
There is an audio-only alternate version at the bottom because it pleases the Red Phone. It’s not a different story, but it has an alternate ending.
Red Phone
The Red Phone must be monitored around the clock. We’re shackled to this room by its cord. They feed us well, but I wish we could eat in more comfortable environs. Bathroom breaks are only allowed if there is someone left in the room to monitor the Red Phone.
These rules are never broken. To ensure that, the room is monitored. There are cameras in every corner and one in the center of the ceiling. Is the monitor room monitored? It seems likely.
What happens when the phone rings? Trust me, you don’t want to know.
Bbbrrrrrrrriiinggggg!!!!
God help us!
I *am* rocked and shocked at the alternate version. What flavor was Charlie eating?

Mission accomplished!
It’s a puppaccino, a little cup of whipped cream. The dogs love them, as you can see.

I’m getting a retro feeling from that phone. I think they are really the babysitters club.

Maybe they’re being called to club babysitters.

So that’s who’s in control! (Alternative version). It’s been on the cards ever since they first domesticated us

Ah, but the alternate version is an alternate reality. Yeah, domestication is overrated.

Red phones are always a worrying sign!

Especially when they’re next to red buttons. There might be one around there somewhere.

I like how you made video readings of your story.

Yikes! I was so fixated by the lovely-looking food I didn’t even see the huge red phone 🙂

The food definitely draws the eye. It looks a lot better than the cereal I was having while writing.

Very good. Fun idea to have the alternate ending version and I love the puppies.

Thank you. My original idea was doom and gloom, but the alternate ending embedded itself in my brain. I couldn’t decide which I liked better. Thank you again. The puppies love most people.

Dear Nobbin,
I love this. Actually like the alternate version more. Ah that pesky word limit. Love your readings. Well done.

Rochelle

I couldn’t decide which I preferred, so I read both. The alternate is six words over the limit, so it was relegated to alternate status.
Thank you, Rochelle.

Scary as whoa, but then I watched the alternate version and all is well. For now.

I thought the alternate version was scarier. To each their own.
