Friday Fictioneers is hosted by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields who provides us with a photo prompt. Each week’s challenge is to write a 100-word story inspired by the photo. Click here to play along or just read more stories.
Where Has Grandfather Gone?
“Where has grandfather gone?”
Since the day his wife disappeared, Lenny Molloy sat in the folding chair he set up by the driveway. The police gave up. His family gave up. Lenny Molloy never gave up. He sat in that chair through weather that would keep the mail carrier away.
His oldest daughter, Jennifer, never Jenny, moved her family into his house to take care of him. Lenny wouldn’t eat, sleep, bathe… if Jennifer hadn’t put him on a schedule.
One snowy April day, the chair sat empty. The little voice ignited panic throughout the house.
“Where has grandfather gone?”
I hope he found her, in this life or the next. Touching story.

I didn’t think there was touching involved. Now, I’m more concerned for Grandfather.
Thank you, Lisa.

Old people wandering off is fairly common. Frantic searches. Maybe it was his time?

Oh yeah! Like cats. I didn’t think of that. That’s good.

Try a microchipped pet collar?

That would have to be done before he disappeared. Maybe next time.

Perhaps Penney has gone searching for his wife. a story with so many possibilities.

Perhaps. Or perhaps he was taken by the same mysterious whatever that took her. Or an unscheduled bathroom break. You’re right. There are a lot of possibilities.

Hopefully, he’s gone to be with his wife, up there, or wherever.

Alien abduction. That’s a fun possibility.

I hope it’s somewhere nice, and that he has a chair there too. Nice one.

If that’s what you hope, that’s what it shall be. Thank you.

I like how everyone gave up but Lenny.

I imagine they’ve been together forever and giving up is not an option. Thank you.

I think grandma nagged the Aliens to go back for her husband, and so they did. And that’s where grandfather went. 😀 Seriously, well told, great atmosphere. Gave me goose bumps.

I like that theory. Goosebumps are quite the compliment. Thank you.

That would be cause for concern! You have left us wondering and for me, worrying!

Wondering and worrying are good reactions. Thank you.

He went for a walk. It got to crowded around the chair. 🙂 Well done.

Wherever he’s gone, I hope nobody else sits on that chair. Very good story – great little details about the daughter too – being a carer of an aged family member myself I admire her for her devotion to Grandpa. It ain’t an easy job.

Ooh! You think the chair or location has something to do with it. That’s an interesting perspective.
I’ve been there, too, with two of my grandparents. Fortunately, neither of them ever wandered off. It is a taxing job.
Thank you.

Dear Nobbin,
Where HAS grandfather gone? Enquiring minds like mine want to know. Well done and fun to listen to.

I’d tell you, but look what happened when they told us who killed Laura Palmer. Nobody cared anymore.
Thank you, Rochelle.
